Private Residence, Winnetka

This house was designed to reflect the Owners' love of Georgian architecture. The inspiration is derived from eighteenth century houses of the eastern seaboard. A graveled fore-court establishes a formal tone for the entrance facade, while a stone terrace presents a more relaxed, though elegant, connection to the garden. The house is really a collection of buildings such as might have developed over time. Materials, details, and scale are varied between the parts and are used to establish a hierarchy for the different elements. The formality of the composition is countered by the warmth of the materials: brick, clapboard, and cedar shingles.
